About Brochures

A brochure is judged in the hand before a word of it is read. Two things decide that verdict, and neither is the design: the paper weight and the fold.

Text stock under about 130gsm feels like a photocopy and goes in the bin at the door of the event. 150gsm is the sensible floor for a company profile; 170gsm and above reads as a business with money. The cover of a multi-page brochure should be heavier than the inside pages -- that step is what makes it feel bound rather than stapled.

The fold changes the story. A tri-fold gives you six small panels and suits a price list or a service menu. A gate-fold opens to a single wide spread and suits one big image or one big idea. A saddle-stitched booklet is the answer past about eight pages, and past forty it wants perfect binding with a proper spine.

Finish is the last decision. Matt lamination is the safe one -- it resists fingerprints and photographs well. Gloss lifts photography but shows every thumbprint at a trade stand. Spot UV on the logo over a matt cover is the cheapest way to look expensive.
