A stamp is bought for speed. It replaces writing the same six lines a hundred times a day, and the only thing that matters is that it still prints cleanly on the hundredth.

Self-inking is the type to buy for daily use. The die flips onto an internal ink pad after every impression, so it is one press per stamp, and a pad carries several thousand impressions before it needs re-inking rather than replacing. Traditional wooden-handle stamps with a separate pad cost less and are fine for occasional use; in a busy office they slow people down and make a mess.

Dater stamps carry adjustable bands for day, month and year alongside your text -- the RECEIVED stamp with today's date beside it is the single most useful stamp in most Kenyan offices, because it timestamps every document that comes through the door.
