Flyers and posters do two completely different jobs, and stock is where they part company.

A flyer is handed over, read once and either kept or dropped. 130gsm to 170gsm gloss art is right: it survives a pocket, prints photography well and costs little in volume. Anything heavier is money spent on something that will be recycled by evening.

A poster is displayed and has to last. 200gsm and up, and if it is going anywhere near weather or a busy corridor, matt laminated -- an unlaminated poster on a Nairobi noticeboard is curled and grubby inside a fortnight. Large-format A1 and A2 print on a different press from the A5 handouts, so tell us the display size at quote stage rather than after.

The layout mistake is universal: too much text. A poster is read at four metres in about two seconds. One message, one image, one instruction. Everything else belongs on the flyer that goes in the hand.

We run political campaign material, event promotion, product launches, church and school programmes, and retail promotions -- often the same artwork across A1 posters, A5 flyers and a roll-up in one order, which is the cheapest way to do it because the artwork is prepared once.
